A Choir for Today’s Youth
Most youth choirs don’t feel relevant to today’s youth, and don’t reflect their identities.
Meanwhile, tons of contemporary musicians (including Colorado hip hop artists) write great songs that check all these boxes.
So what if youth choir directors and Colorado artists teamed up to build something that clicks for today’s youth?
We were crazy enough to give it a try, and that’s why we created VOCO.
What started in 2017 with 20 kids now reaches 200 youth each year, and more than 60% of those kids identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, or part of immigrant, migrant, or refugee communities.
More than music.
More than a choir.
VOCO is more than music—and it’s definitely more than a choir.
It’s a place where kids grow and come into their own in ways they never knew were possible.
Youth consistently share that VOCO boosts their confidence, strengthens their resilience, improves their mental health, and helps them feel safe and connected. They tell us they trust our staff—not just as teachers, but as supportive adults they can turn to if they’re struggling or if they or someone they know is being bullied.
At VOCO, this is what community looks like. And for the kids in our programs, that community isn’t just nice—it’s an affirming, life-changing gift.
